Happy Morning With The Girls! [MOMLIFE]

On a typical morning, I lie in bed a little and take my time to wake up. I was basically up since 4:30am, I don't feel bad about it. Then, if Nui Nui passes my room and sees us up, or hears us up, she will run in eagerly to greet us. I know, I'm a lucky mama.

This morning was a fun one because we were greeted by not just Nui Nui/Big Sister but Mom/Grandma as well :>

My room is a mess and I took (and posted) too many photos but that's ok. I love this little family moment we had. They are my everything. xo

Just Keep Riding The Wave [MOMLIFE, PREGNANCY]

'Just keep riding the wave.' That's what my mom told me on Friday as I was driving home from the hospital.

Her comment stuck out to me because, if you know my mom, her english is good but it's not her first, and I was surprised she knew this idiom. Even I am not too familiar with it (not that my english is perfect either).

I asked her what she meant. She explained there have been a lot of waves throughout this pregnancy and I just need to keep overcoming them as I have been. Perfect idiom. Perfect mom :> She is so right and nailed it— both in meaning and context.

This pregnancy hasn't been easy. From extreme and lengthy morning sickness, to not just getting laid off but being improperly treated by my former employer, to dealing with a bigot for being a single mom, to dealing with almost cruel and unusual responses from blood relations when I shared my expectancy news.

But, so far at least, I have been overcoming each and every one of them. Thankfully.

Nope, I didn't go into false labor. Baby's good. I'm good. My latest issue, though, has been this heat wave we experienced this past week. My feet weren't taking it so well, especially without air conditioning.

A few weeks back we had another heat wave and that's when it all began and the edema just hasn't subsided since. The swelling has been up and down at various degrees but never as severe as it was a couple of days ago.

At my checkup on Friday, I showed my doctor. She even whipped out the tape measure and everything. She recommended I go to the hospital to get an ultrasound— not on my belly but my legs— to make sure I don't have DVT, or deep vein thrombosis, aka. a blood clot in my legs.

When I was pregnant with Nui Nui, I also had edema in my feet and it actually started earlier than this pregnancy, so I honestly wasn't really that seriously concerned about it. I just casually mentioned it to her, as I try to keep her updated as best I can so she can hopefully have the best picture of how my pregnancy is going.

Not taking it too seriously, she had to say 'life-threatening' and 'mortality' several times for the potential situation to get through to my brain. She explained that there could potentially be a clot in my leg(s), which is causing the swelling, and if there is, that clot could potentially travel up to my lungs and be 'life-threatening', aka. I could die.

So, I went to the hospital I am expected to deliver and got an ultrasound on my legs.

Considering I went swimming this week, celebrated Nui Nui's birthday at school, and did all the prep for her birthday party, I thought I had been pretty active for a clot to form.

Happy to report, NO CLOTS! I still have swelling but I think the worst of it has subsided as the heat has broken as of yesterday. Or am hoping.

As I write this, I am officially 38 weeks. That's two weeks to go. I'm admittedly getting a little nervous about delivery but... I'll just keep riding the wave and tackle each one as they come. Can't wait to meet this little kicker. xo

What I Learned From Marissa Mayer's Pregnancy Announcement [MOMLIFE]

Making its way around the media circuit is the announcement that Marissa Mayer, CEO of corporate giant Yahoo, is pregnant. Not only that but she plans to continue working throughout her pregnancy and will 'not [avail] herself of Yahoo’s 16 weeks of paid maternity leave'.

I found this news out first by Bloomberg Businessweek's article, Marissa Mayer Rewrites Rules for CEO Parenting, Again, and something about it rubbed me the wrong way.

Most likely, it's due to the article's suggestive interpretations.
'[Her] very public determination to not let motherhood get in the way of running a company could be encouraging to would-be corporate executives.

“She’s setting a new path for younger, smart women coming up behind her,” said Carol Hochman, a former CEO of Danskin and chairman of Women in America. Of course Mayer has the means “to figure out how to make this work.” Her compensation was $59.1 million last year.

Still, others may find inspiration in her treating parenthood as most male executives do.

And there's the rub. As a mother, I'm not particularly encouraged nor inspired by her determination or decisions. Instead, at least initially, at first read, I was left feeling inadequate.

To start, Marissa isn't just expecting a baby later this year, she's expecting two— twins— which increases both her pregnancy risks and symptoms that comes with having multiples. Her decision or determination to work throughout her pregnancy is a personal one and NOT one that every mother-to-be can and should make.

Every woman experiences pregnancy different and, to no fault of her own, some have harder times than others. I took a medical leave in my current pregnancy because of extreme morning sickness and I refuse to feel bad about it. It wasn't Marissa's path, it was mine. And it was the best decision for me, my pregnancy, and my family.

Moreover, Marissa is 40 years old. In her announcement, she quells any wonder if she underwent fertility treatment to become pregnant, contributing to her super-exec/supermom superhero image and perpetuating the all-too-common misconception that getting pregnant at that age is perhaps simple and normal, even when holding a high-power/high-paying/high-stress job and child already in tow.

Maybe it was easy for her to get pregnant at 40 and maybe her pregnancy with twins at 40 is a breeze, even with all her responsibilities. If that's really the case, then good for her. She's lucky. Yes, lucky. Because pregnancy, for the most part, really is mostly about luck. But one individual's luck should NOT be defining the path for others, let alone future generations.

What I particularly appreciated about Mark Zuckerberg's announcement about his wife expecting was that it was honest and helped shed light on the difficulties of becoming pregnant, despite how much they wanted it or even how much money (or access to resources) they have. It's not to say every pregnancy announcement by corporate leaders should necessarily be educational, per se, but it's a gift to be shared not a journey to be followed.

Lastly, skipping maternity leave isn't an act of heroism nor is it admirable nor should Marissa's personal decision perpetuate our country's backward practice that doesn't entitle new mothers the opportunity to spend enough time with their newborn without the loss of income.

The majority of new moms didn't make over $59 million in the previous year. They don't have the luxury to build a private nursery right next to their office either, or hire however much help $59 million can buy.

As we look at leaders to learn from, we should be cognizant of what lives/livelihoods we are comparing and the standards/norms/expectations we should and maybe should NOT be setting based upon them.

Call me crazy but I'm unemployed from a layoff, single, and expecting my second child, and yet STILL I consider myself as having it all. Financial unworry, I could always use a little more of but at least I'm living the dream. MY dream. Not Marissa's or anyone else's. xo

We Are Warriors

Warriors.

When I was pregnant with Nui Nui back in the summer of 2011, the mother for whom I was finishing up tutoring her twin boys wrote:

'All the best to you and soon to the third female warrior in the family.'

From then on, I referred to us women of the family as Warriors. And though the reference was not my own, we own it.

We are fighters. We believe in love, happiness, and good health. We fight against illness, tough times, and the hate (or disapproval) of our unconventionalism. We fight for each other and we do it together. As individuals, we are strong but, with our combined strengths, we are even stronger. We are warriors. xo

Pregnancy Update - 31 Weeks! [VIDEO]

I must've been feeling really chatty. My days have been filled lately and I just had a lot to talk about-- OB's bad news, baby preparations, Mark Zuckerberg, and career goals, to name some.

Grab some popcorn, this is a long one :> xo

First Post Of 2015!

Hello Readers!

It's been a while, I know. I've been sick since Xmas day and still recovering from one of the nastiest viruses ever.

I have a lot of catching up to do but thought I would post our very first pics of the New Year first.

We're explorers :> And tried out a new cafe nearby that we spotted a few weeks ago. Being on this soup diet (jk, sort of :> to help soothe my throat and clear my sinuses), I sipped on this roasted cauliflower soup, Mom had a mini-loaf cheese bread, and Nui Nui had a chocolate almond croissant.

Loved the interior design, the food was meh, the prices were through the roof, and the company was top-notch :>

How was your holiday? Share in the Comments below, we'd love to hear! :> xoxo
